Fall

He rode his scaffold as it dropped,
his rigid wing reflected in windows
he’d yet to wash

as he careened down the side of the building,
splayed on his plywood platform
as if crucified by nails of air,

the doyennes of the Upper East Side
watching him hurtle past
their broad reaches of glass

as their mouths formed another void,
and he plunged into the alley below,
his eyes dull as windows crusted with dirt,

his days of scaling heights over.
But how it must have felt to kite on wind,
to lift, for a moment,

before falling.
